Quake is shaking up the game world again.
The influential franchise that set the standard for shooting games and online battling over the past decade or so — and still remains popular — has turned its sights toward casual Web gamers who are perhaps looking for a challenge a bit less sedate than Sudoku.
With its new free Web-based game, Quake Live, launching today at quakelive.com, developer id Software may expand beyond typical hard-core players. "We think there's a whole lot of people out there that wouldn't spend $60 or $70 for a top-of-the-line, modern Gears of War 2 or Halo 3 sort of game, but they may find that they really do enjoy this," says id's co-founder John Carmack.
Quake games have sold more than 5 million copies; Live is an updated version of Quake III Arena, the 1999 title that became a global phenomenon. A fast-paced multiplayer shooting game originally played online and via locally networked computers now will be available to anyone with a standard Web browser.
"We've given it the accessibility you would expect from a Web game," says executive producer Marty Stratton. "That enables us to do a lot of things you would expect from a sports site, in the way we present the statistics and information, and a social networking site, in the way we connect people and let them know what their friends are doing."
