When Rockstar invited us down to Sydney to get to have a run on GTA Chinatown Wars on the Nintendo DS, we were keen as hell to give it a go. Why? Because we needed to be convinced that the DS, as a system, could house such a large game world - with a substantial range of missions like all the other titles in the GTA series.

First of all, there were some things that really went out the window. The first of these is the subdued thought that this isn’t really a GTA game, just something to make the best out of a system to squeeze a few more dollars from the consumers of the world, on a system not yet squeezed by Rockstar. This, as a notion, couldn’t be further from the truth. From the manga-styled intro to the dialogue scrolling across the screen, this feels like a GTA game. It’s got the same grittiness the others have, minus the voice acting.

This is Liberty City, albeit from a new perspective. But as much as you remember from the other games, you’ll get refreshed here. From flying out to the Statue of Happiness to cruising around Dukes, the only difference between this and GTA IV is the lack of height. Roads and train lines go transparent when you travel under them, but they’re there, complete with trains rolling along and other touches that make you feel right at home.
