Gambing starts to offer at Ohio Bowling Center

Could bowling centers provide some economic relief for the state? The Bowling Centers Association of Ohio, which represents the interests of 300 bowling centers across the state, thinks so.
“As Ohio lawmakers grapple with the huge budget deficit, the bowling centers are proposing a limited expansion of gaming in their centers,” political consultant Connie Nolder said. “BCAO supports a maximum of 10 video lottery terminals per center, located in a secured area, only accessible to those customers 21 years or older.”
The terminals, Nolder said, would be managed by the Ohio Lottery Commission and could bring in more than $130 million per year to help Ohio schools.
The potential expansion of the state’s gambling industry to permit the use of video lottery terminals (VLTs), commonly referred to as slot machines casino, is no longer limited to racetrack owners and casinos investors. The BCAO hired Nolder to help the organization undertake a grass-roots effort to enable bowling centers to have slot machines if expanded gaming comes to the state.

The PlayStation is, at the moment, the most popular piece of gaming hardware in the world. After selling more than 136 million pieces of hardware around the world, the PS2 recently saw its price drop to $99.99 in North America, that magical sub-$100 price point that makes the system so palatable for gamers on a budget. In fact, Sony is the only major console maker that is still interested in (and profiting from) its last-generation hardware.

Ars caught up with John Koller, Director of Hardware Marketing for Sony Computer Entertainment America, to talk about the system that refuses to die.

A changing audience
While some core gamers may still have PS2s in their entertainment centers, the demographic for the system has changed. "At this stage of its lifecycle, the primary audience centers on casual and social gamers, skewing more towards families who want to play as a family, and individuals who enjoy PlayStation 2 for its wide variety of games and its capabilities as a DVD and CD player," Koller told Ars.

"From a pure gaming perspective, the PlayStation 2 provides a ton of value to those who want a gaming system that feeds into family night or other social activities, considering the low cost of entry for the hardware as well as for the games themselves."

PS2 sales are also important because they get gamers comfortable and happy with the Sony name and then when they're ready—it's time for a PS3. That's the theory, at least.

When Rockstar invited us down to Sydney to get to have a run on GTA Chinatown Wars on the Nintendo DS, we were keen as hell to give it a go. Why? Because we needed to be convinced that the DS, as a system, could house such a large game world - with a substantial range of missions like all the other titles in the GTA series.

First of all, there were some things that really went out the window. The first of these is the subdued thought that this isn’t really a GTA game, just something to make the best out of a system to squeeze a few more dollars from the consumers of the world, on a system not yet squeezed by Rockstar. This, as a notion, couldn’t be further from the truth. From the manga-styled intro to the dialogue scrolling across the screen, this feels like a GTA game. It’s got the same grittiness the others have, minus the voice acting.

This is Liberty City, albeit from a new perspective. But as much as you remember from the other games, you’ll get refreshed here. From flying out to the Statue of Happiness to cruising around Dukes, the only difference between this and GTA IV is the lack of height. Roads and train lines go transparent when you travel under them, but they’re there, complete with trains rolling along and other touches that make you feel right at home.

Game industry icon Hideo "all cutscenes, all the time" Kojima has suggested that Killzone 2's motion control implementations were rushed, and in doing so has warned his fellow game developers that careful use of such new control schemes is important. After spending some time with the upcoming PS3 exclusive, Kojima reported a less than fluid experience with the Sixaxis:
For some players, motion control will come naturally straight away, but for others it might feel difficult, so the game designer is really now responsible to think about which direction he or she should take. I played Killzone 2 this morning, actually, and it was funny because the FPS control was traditional FPS, but when you come to a door and have to kind of open the latch, you all of a sudden have to use the Sixaxis, and nobody was succeeding. So maybe they were kind of rushing to implement the technical design, which might not be the correct way to do it in that title.

Learning Curve : Medium - Insane Difficulty - the first few level are very straight forward after that well it is not at all..and can be very over complicated

Lasting Appeal: 6/10 - good luck beating this game…I would recommend a really long trip or maybe a hospital stay to play this game all the way through

1. Killzone 2 is the most anticipated title coming out for the PS3. Are you equally hyped for this game and do you believe the game will live up to the expectations?

I’ve been hyped for Killzone 2 ever since I saw the CGI trailer back in 2005. Over the years, there has been so much talk about whether or not the finished product would be able to match that trailer, and everything I’ve seen so far about the game indicates that it does. It’s not the graphics that really makes KZ2 pop for me, but the type of weighty and intense gameplay Guerrilla has created. Polygons and high-res textures are great, don’t get me wrong, but it’s the care that GG has put into perfecting everything down to the smallest detail that makes KZ2 so special. The sound your gun makes changes depending on how full the clip is; sparks from grenades bounce around like they would in the real world. Killzone 2 isn’t just a graphical behemoth, it truly is “war perfected.”

These snazzy pics come straight from Sony's official Playstation Blog. Curiously, they're not even listed as costume packs, but simply as "a taste of things to come". Does this mean we're getting a Killzone, Heavenly Sword AND Buzz! content pack? That would be kind of insane... although, what would one put in a Buzz download for LBP? Still, it's mysteriously worded for a reason. No word yet on a release window for these new duds/packs.

Whenever a big-name fighting game is released, there is much wailing and gnashing of teeth as gamers everywhere buckle down and get to unlocking all the characters. This could be a simple process, such as throwing in a cheat code. There could also be prerequisites that are nearly impossible. Unlocking all the characters in Street Fighter IV lands somewhere in the middle.

I was one of the loud complainers when I began my quest to unlock Akuma, Seth, and of course Gouken, but during my journey—and I'm not done yet—I came to appreciate the road for what it was. To unlock Gouken, you have to beat the game with everyone except Seth, and then win with a perfect victory, and then win with three Ultra Combos. It's not easy, and when I began I didn't even know how to land an Ultra Combo.

Needless to say, I learned. I began the quest with a good friend over a few sodas; we passed the arcade stick back and forth as we discussed each character we played in turn. We didn't run through it, although we did turn the difficulty down and change the matches to one round. We looked up the moves for each character and tried each one at least once or twice. Seth went from an annoyance to a challenge: you simply had to find the cheese-tastic moves for each character to beat him.

The first week of the Tom “Durrrr” Dwan challenge has come to an end. After some big swings Dwan finds himself up nearly $150,000 (or slightly under 4 buy-ins) on Patrik Antonius. The swings have been huge, as are the stakes. In the end one of these two players will walk away the victor and either $500,000 or $1,500,000 richer.

So far Antonius has been running quite well in some Pre-Flop all-ins while Dwan has been running even better in the biggest pots. The two largest pots, both over $164,000, have gone to Dwan. In the first of the two big pots Dwan’s overpair+flush draw out ran a flopped set from Antonius in a 4bet pot. In the other pot Antonius ran a huge bluff over 200bb deep only to run into Dwan’s flopped (and slowplayed) nut-straight.

Early on things went quite well for Durrrr as he was up nearly $200,000 approximately 1500 hands in. Except that's not his tongue, it's his 30-foot long, prehensile undead wang and it's Zoey's turn to do some smoking!

She's able to pull out her pistol and blow away the zombie but a few moments later another one catches her by surprise and to her apparent (although not particularly enthusiastic) consternation, the pistol is lost but the blowing continues. The remaining seven minutes of the video manages to be simultaneously disturbing, hilarious and oddly riveting, so to speak.

Okay, I'll stop there. But I can't honestly say what this is all about. It's possible the porn industry is going viral by releasing a quickie crossover video appealing directly to gamers, but isn't that kind of redundant? It's not as though porn needs to make a big breakthrough with the gamer demographic and it's not as though gamers, to feed the stereotype, aren't already up to their (eye)balls in porn anyway.

The Robot arena fighter will be getting a complete conversion over to the XBLA using V5.66 - the very final version released in the arcades. V5.66 was released after the Dreamcast version, and instead of using Sega's Model-3 arcade board was instead using the easier to use Naomi board used for games like Crazy Taxi and Marvel Vs. Capcom 2. This version featured 3 additional Cyber Troopers as well as all the arenas added in the Dreamcast version.

The game looks to be a full update of the game, including wide screen support and online play over Xbox Live. It is planned for an April release for 1,200 Microsoft Points.

The retail box price of EVE Online's upcoming expansion, Apocrypha, has been revealed.

During an interview on MMORPG.com, CCP's Ryan Dancey said the game will have a SRP of €39.99 EUROS and $39.95 USD.

In addition to this, Dancey reminded EVE players that the retail box will include several other bonuses including a career guide and 60 days of game time. New characters created using the retail version of Apocrypha will also receive a special shuttle with an expanded cargo capacity.

Last week, a new teaser trailer for the expansion was released, which gives players an idea of what they will be up against in Apocrypha. The game goes on sale 10 March.

Microsoft and Channel 4 have partnered with Pixel Lab to host a two-day game design challenge at the University of Derby.

Taking place from March 20th, the X48 event will bring together 80 students for what is being branded as 'the first XNA GameCamp'. Attendees will use the facilities at the University of Derby's Computer Games Lab, and are charged with creating prototypes projects using XNA Game Studio 3.0 within the two-day time limit.

The event is designed to encourage the next-generation of game development professionals and foster innovation. At the weekend's closing ceremony, finished prototypes will be presented to a Microsoft-led panel of judge.

Channel 4's commissioning editor for education Alice Taylor said: "We're fully behind encouraging collaboration and competition between young and emerging British indie gaming talent, and fully approve of the freewheeling creative environment that X48 is going to produce.

The Australian Classification website is always good for new information regarding unannounced games for digital download services. Today brings us a fascinating entry which could mean a lot in the long run - Sega Australia has rated Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram for release.
Virtual On is a series of one-versus-one battles between giant robots, or Cyber Trooper, of various factions. Each Cyber Trooper has three weapons they can use to battle, as they skim around a battlefield blasting at each other. Virtual On was noted for using a large controller called the twin-stick, but could be used without it just fine.

Virtual On was released back in 1995 and had a release on the Sega Saturn - it was also released for the PlayStation 2 back in 2007 in Japan. However, this is not that game. This is Oratorio Tangram, its 1999 sequel released for the Model-3 Arcade cabinet and on the Sega Dreamcast. This is getting interesting.

With the release of Outrun Online Arcade on the horizon we speculated that Sega could also be working on bringing their other classics across. Virtual On is a perfect choice for the Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network, with an arcade mode and the chance of online battles, this could be fantastic.

The rating does not specify who exactly is doing the port, as it sometimes does. It has not been Sega's style to port it themselves, with Backbone doing the Sega Vintage Collection games and Sumo Digital doing the Outrun Online Arcade, but we could definitely see Foundation 9 being a part of it.

It's an interesting choice for Sega, particularly Sega of America as they did not release the Dreamcast version of VO:OT themselves, letting Activision do it. The US version also removed the online play, and was never released in Europe, making this Australian classification even sweeter.

It's time again for a healthy dose of dots and demons, with Blood Pact! Now sporting a new host: Nicholas Whelan! Having at last removed the stench of brimstone from my robes, I'd like to start things off right with a post about gearing up for 10-man Naxxramas.

Wrath of the Lich King has created a new standard for sheer volume of content available to players as soon as they hit max level. And with content, comes gear!

Reputation grinds such as the Argent Crusade and the Kirin Tor can be completed in only a few days, even if you schedule time to deal with things like 'real life'.

Crafted gear is mostly bind on equip now, making it much more accessible. Several heroics, such as Utgarde Keep, Violet Hold, and Nexus, are easy enough that a DPS can usually slip into them shortly after hitting 80 without slowing their group down. Even the 10- and 25-man versions of Obsidian Sanctum and Vault of Archavon, are frequently cleared by pick-up-groups.Head slot items for warlocks are pretty much limited to three right now.

My current favorite is The Argent Skullcap, attained through a rather simple quest-chain in Icecrown. The high amount of hit rating makes getting that all-important 446 much simpler, and it's far easier and cheaper to get than either of the other two pre-Naxx headpieces. Though if you're a tailor The Hat of Wintry Doom may serve as a skill-up for you.

And if the Forgotten Shadow Hood happens to drop in Heroic Culling of Stratholme, it's also a good choice. However, that 446 hit rating has to come from somewhere, and I've rarely seen any piece of gear with as much as The Argent Skullcap has.

In Zak's previous attempt he only managed to win 28 in a row before being beaten by Hatim Habashi, but this time Zak stepped up and beat 108 players consecutively.

In fact WoW Insider was informed via one of Preeg's guildies that he's not only a guild leader in the game, but that he plays a Combat Rogue with 450 (that'd be maxed) Enchanting and Inscription and runs a progression guild that's downed almost everything the game has to offer.

Welcome to the first development update on our mod, "Pirates of the Caribbean: New Horizons".

How we mod PotC
PotC was released in 2003 as a third-person RPG. As a base for modding, the game had both its advantages and limitations.
The foremost disadvantage of the game was the title - the storyline had virtually nothing to do with the Disney-movies. It was also rather bugged and a patch was never released. Actually, Akella's ambitions on the graphics level have always been quite low. Although the game's graphics were fairly good upon release, by now they're dated compared to newer games. Of course Akella considers gameplay more important. So do we, I guess.
The greatest advantage of this game is how the engine handles the code. The game compiles the code before it loads. This makes it easy to modify the code without requiring any external programs. If you know a bit of coding, you'll quickly familiarize yourself with the game's language, a mix of C and Perl. Obviously as time passes, graphics cards are just getting better. We no longer have complaints from people, who can't run the game due to lowspec graphics cards :o)

The Team
First, we are not working towards the goal of being famous, acknowledged and awarded. We do this, because we really want to and we do it ourselves.This does not mean, we are a closed modding-community, only letting people in we know or only work as individials on our own mods. Quite the opposite. If you have an idea and you can mod - great, make it real! If you can´t mod, we¨ll help you out as much as we can, but you need to do the most part yourself. There is room for everybody, but we do have some common goals and those are 1st priority.
Second we have no boss, no deadlines. Nobody gets angry or disappointed, if you do not stand and deliver. As we are doing this in our sparetime, what is more important than real life?
This is probably the reason why this mod is over 5 years old, and most of the modders have been members for more than 2 years. To us, modding is a hobby, as much as it is a learning process.

The Game Engine
The game engine is called Stom 2.0 (1.0 was used for Seadogs, 2.5 was used for Age of Pirates: Caribbean Tales). It handles a pre-defined, huge basic area of water.
The game engine divide this huge area into squares and load them as locations. Via "locators", islands are tied together into this basic area, resembling the Caribbean. And the islands are again divided into smaller locations, tied together via "locators" etc etc down to the smallest prop, that has its own "locators". With the help of a matematical system, the engine manages the location of the player at all times and what square to load, if the player is exiting one location and enters another.
